Meet the Author: Evangeline Denmark

Evangeline DenmarkEvangeline Denmark cannot sing. The tragic discovery of this truth led to bouts of angst-ridden poetry writing in her teens, an ill-advised relationship with Edward Fairfax Rochester, and the compulsive creation of her own fictional worlds. Having found her true voice, Evangeline now writes fiction with hints of whimsy, glimmers of fantasy, and strokes of the supernatural.

Evangeline’s debut novel, CURIO (HarperCollins/Blink, January 5, 2016), is a Young Adult steampunk fantasy. When Grey Haward defies the Chemist Council that rules her western mining town, she must flee to an enchanted cabinet where the curios have come to life. But revolution is brewing between the beautiful, cruel porcelains and the lower class clockwork people, and when Grey finds the only other human in Curio, a boy disguised as the Mad Tock, he’s fighting for the wrong side. Can she trust him to help her get home?

Fun facts:

  • Favorite book growing up: JANE EYRE
  • Childhood aspiration: Evangeline wanted to be a singer when she was little and somehow missed all the winces of her polite family and vocal coach. But in high school the word crafting that had always been part of her life took hold and thankfully redirected her attention.
  • Favorite time of day/place to write: Mid-afternoon, when her kids inconveniently get off school/in the office she shares with her Minecraft-obsessed kids
  • Book currently reading/most recently read: THIS MONSTROUS THING by Mackenzi Lee
  • Favorite things to do (other than reading): Eat cheese and nuts, contemplate the possibility that she might be a furry rodent of some kind, watch movies, scavenge thrift shops and antique stores with her maker/steampunk artist husband.
  • Favorite sports teams: the Gryffindor Quidditch team
  • Surprising personal fact: Evangeline is the daughter of fantasy novelist Donita K. Paul
  • Greatest thing about being a 2016 debut author: Evangeline began writing novels in January of 2006 after suffering a miscarriage. CURIO enters the world in January of 2016, exactly ten years later.
